In this time where reducing trips to the grocery store or the number of grocery packages delivered is ideal, we can all benefit from keeping our fresh greens fresh as long as possible! Here are three tips to keeping your leafy greens fresh:
- Not all fruits and vegetables are created equal when it comes to storage! Some fruits and vegetables release a gas called ethylene as they ripen, and many are sensitive to ethylene and ripen further (i.e. rot faster) in its presence. Store leafy greens towards the back of the fridge or in a crisper drawer set to high-humidity/vegetables. Here’s a super helpful cheat sheet (download the Produce Storage Guide) to determine which produce goes together. In general, avoid storing fruits with vegetables.
- Rinse and allow greens to dry completely before storing, as moisture will encourage wilting more quickly. If you have room, place a bunch of hardy greens like kale upright in a cup of water (like a bouquet!) to keep them ultra-fresh.
- Store in glass containers rather than plastic ones (glass keeps food colder). Or consider other plastic-free storage options such as reusable storage bags.
